Year 4 Ancient Egyptian Day

Year 4 had an amazing Ancient Egyptian Day to bring our history topic to life and celebrate everything we’ve been learning in class!
.We began the day by hearing the incredible story of Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. The children then stepped into the shoes of real archaeologists, acting out the moment of excavation with great excitement and imagination—brushing away the sand and peering into the “wonderful things” within the tomb!
After break, pupils took part in five rotating activities, each offering a different glimpse into Ancient Egyptian life and culture. In one activity, they pieced together broken pottery fragments (sherds) just like real archaeologists would in the field. Another station focused on language and writing: children listened to a reading about the Rosetta Stone and wrote their names in hieroglyphics on real papyrus paper, specially brought from Egypt.
Other activities included playing an Ancient Egyptian board game, sketching detailed drawings of canopic jars, and handling real artefacts while speaking to Neil—a professional archaeologist who shared fascinating insights into Ancient Egyptian history.
In the afternoon, excitement continued as pupils learnt about the process of mummification. Working together, they carried out a step-by-step demonstration of how a body was prepared for the afterlife. To finish the day, they proudly presented their learning to parents, who were invited in to see the incredible work and effort the children had put in.A huge thank you to all the families who came to watch!
The children were enthusiastic, focused, and full of curiosity. We have been incredibly proud of them all for the contributions and enthusiasm they showed today. Well done Year 4!
