English
Introduction
At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that proficiency in English is fundamental to pupils' academic success and personal development. Our English curriculum is designed to instil a love of reading and writing, equipping pupils with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive both in their education and beyond.
Key Aims
Our English curriculum aims to:
- Develop pupils' fluency and confidence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Foster a deep appreciation for high-quality literature and a curiosity to explore a diverse range of texts
- Cultivate pupils' ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and coherently in a variety of contexts
- Empower pupils to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings through creative and analytical writing
- Support pupils in developing their vocabulary, grammar, and spelling skills to enhance their written and spoken language
Content and Skills
Underpinned by the principles of systematic synthetic phonics, our English curriculum ensures that pupils acquire a strong foundation in decoding, reading comprehension, and early writing skills. As pupils progress, they will develop a deeper understanding of language structures, literary devices, and genre conventions. Alongside this, we will explicitly teach the essential skills of planning, drafting, revising, and editing to enable pupils to become confident and accomplished writers.
Progression
Throughout Key Stages 1 and 2, our English curriculum is carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and skills. Pupils will engage with an increasingly complex range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, developing their critical thinking and analytical capabilities. They will also have opportunities to apply their English skills across the curriculum, reinforcing their understanding and preparing them for the demands of secondary education.
Wider Impact
By delivering a high-quality English curriculum, we aim to empower our pupils to become articulate, literate, and confident individuals. The skills and knowledge they develop will not only support their academic achievement but also equip them with the tools to navigate the world beyond school, enabling them to express themselves effectively, access a wealth of information, and engage with their communities.
