Bikeability
Bikeability is a national cycle training programme that teaches children the skills and confidence to ride their bikes safely. Delivered by qualified instructors, the programme helps primary school pupils learn how to control their bikes, understand road safety, and develop awareness of their surroundings while cycling. Bikeability helps children develop healthy habits while supporting their wellbeing, confidence, and safety.
Bikeability sessions are practical and engaging, allowing children to practise real-life cycling skills in a supportive and structured environment. Pupils learn important techniques such as starting and stopping safely, signalling, road positioning, and making safe decisions when riding near traffic. These skills help children become more confident and independent cyclists.
Alongside developing road safety awareness, Bikeability also supports children’s physical health and mental wellbeing. Cycling is an enjoyable form of exercise that helps improve fitness, coordination, and stamina. Being physically active outdoors can also boost mood, reduce stress, and increase energy levels.
Taking part in Bikeability can also help build confidence and resilience. As children master new skills and overcome challenges, they develop a sense of achievement and self-belief. Cycling can also encourage independence and provide opportunities for social interaction with friends and family.
