Music

Every class across the school has a specialist Music teacher that comes in to teach a musical instrument. Examples include

  • Samba drumming
  • Recorders
  • DooDs
  • Ukuleles
  • Guitar

Learning a musical instrument offers primary school children far more than just musical skills—it supports their mental health, wellbeing, and overall development. Whether it’s the piano, guitar, recorder, or drums, learning an instrument encourages focus, patience, and perseverance as children practise, refine, and master new techniques.

Playing music enhances cognitive skills, including memory, concentration, and problem-solving, which can positively impact learning across other subjects. It also provides a creative outlet for self-expression, allowing children to explore emotions in a safe and constructive way. This can help reduce stress, boost mood, and foster a sense of calm and satisfaction.

Learning an instrument also supports social and emotional development. Group lessons or ensemble participation teach teamwork, cooperation, and communication, helping children build confidence and make friends. Successfully learning a piece of music or performing in front of others gives a strong sense of achievement, building self-esteem and resilience.

Beyond individual growth, music encourages a lifelong appreciation for creativity and expression. Children who engage with music regularly often report feeling happier, more focused, and emotionally balanced. Overall, learning a musical instrument nurtures wellbeing, cognitive skills, and social confidence, helping children thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Young Voices

Children are also offered the opportunity to participate in a Nation wide musical event called Young Voices.

Young Voices gives children the chance to perform in world-class arenas alongside amazing artists – a huge boost to their confidence, teamwork and motivation. Singing also supports wellbeing, with breathing and focus techniques built into rehearsals.

Children rehearse at school, and we provide online resources so they can practise at home too. Our song choices span a variety of styles, giving pupils a broad and enriching musical experience.

1-2-1 Music Lessons

There is a variety of opportunities to sign up to 1-2-1 music lessons, for example, keyboard, violin and drumming. If you are interested in your child doing this, please pop into the school office to ask for more information.
